La Concepcion is the most beautiful and important tropical garden in Spain and one of the best in all Europe. Created 150 years ago by the Marquess of Loring, this garden is home to 5000 different plants, labelled with their scientific Latin names. In 1943 "La Concepción" Garden was declared a historical and artistic garden and is now owned and managed by the local authority under the auspices of the City of Málaga Municipal Botanical Society. Almost five thousand plants grow in two hundred and fifty thousand square kilometres inside the city. La Concepción, which is located on the Carretera de las Pedrizas at km 166, is considered to be one of the best displays of tropical flora in all of Europe.

Newly re-opened in September 2005, this beautiful garden is home to a vast selection of flora and fauna, in an exquisite setting. A visit gives you the opportunity to wander around these beautiful subtropical gardens belonging to a 17th-century private estate as well as seeing all the 150 different species of tropical birds. You'll find "El Retiro" in what's now a suburb of the city called Churriana, just 20 minutes from the centre. It's open all day and has a cafe-bar where you can have lunch. El retiro is located just a few minutes from the coast and Málaga airport. It is really a wonderful natural spectacle, with lakes, cascades and hundreds of species of plants and trees.
