This 16th-century Renaissance cathedral in Málaga's center was built on the site of a great mosque. The construction of the Cathedral in Málaga began in 1528 after conquering Málaga from the Moors and stretched from the 16C to the 18C. The mixture of styles is very apparent in this Cathedral, with a predominance of the Renaissance style. In fact, it shows many different architectural styles such as a Gothic fundament, Renaissance facades and Baroque towers.
Although the Cathedral in Málaga suffered damage during the Spanish Civil War, it remains vast and impressive, reflecting changing styles of interior architecture. Furthermore, this cathedral has been declared a national monument. From the Plaza de la Marina, Calle Molina Larios leads into the old town, which is dominated by the cathedral with its twin-towered façade. In fact, outside, you will see an unfinished tower; this is the reason why the cathedral is also called «The One-armed». There are three decorative doors as well, in different colours of marble with on the middle door, the relief painting of the Incarnation, the name of the cathedral. You'll find, in chapels next to the Cathedral, interesting painting works, such as: The "Weeping Mother" by Pedro de Mena, the "Christ on the cross" by Alonso de Mena, and a large "Virgin of the Rosary" by Alonso Cano.

Málaga has a number of art museums, and the most notable is Museu Picasso Málaga, Picasso Museum. Málaga is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, who is one of the most famous sons of the city. You can find his birth house at the Plaza de la Merced 15. Today his house is home to the Foundation Picasso. The Picasso Museum is near his birthplace in the historic quarter of Málaga and displays some of his family’s heirlooms.
The Picasso Museum is, without doubt, worth a visit for anybody interested in Málaga's most famous artist. The museum can be found at the Palacio de Buenavista at Calle San Augustin and it houses more than 200 works here in different media including paintings, drawings, graphics, ceramics and sculpture.
Picasso's heirs (daughter-in-law Christine and grandson Bernard Ruiz-Picasso) have placed 204 pieces of work from their private collections at the disposal of the Picasso Museum in 2003. These pieces cover all the creative periods of the artist's work. Among others, the paintings that were never displayed until recently include: Bust of a Woman with Arms Crossed Behind Her Head, The Eyes of the Artist and Woman in an Armchair. Another painting is of Picasso’s son and was painted in 1923.
