Metro Madrid

The Metro system in Madrid is one of the largest in the world, which is especially remarkable considering Madrid's population of approximately 3.5 million (Madrid city) to 6 million (metropolitan area). It is also one of the fastest growing in the world, rivaled only by the Seoul Metro (Seoul). The round of expansions completed in spring 2007 increased its length to 317 km. The metro has 316 stations on 13 lines plus one branch line. Approximately 92% of the total track length is underground. The 13 lines of the Madrid metro system are differentiated by color and are numbered 1 to 13.

Metro system is an efficient, inexpensive, and quite comfortable way to cross-town, and it runs from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Individual tickets cost 1€ and packages of 10 cost 6.15€, they can be purchased at any kiosk or station. You can find your tickets in booths and automated machines. It's recommendable to carry every moment a Madrid metro map.

With all air conditioned cars, one can travel from Madrid Barajas Airport to downtown, Móstoles suburb, and throughout the city, reaching all 4-corners. The metro system covers more than 227km (141 miles) and is good value, clean and efficient, although crowded during rush hour. Trains run every 3 to 5 minutes, daily from 06:00 a.m. to 01:30 a.m.
