Local Trains MadridSuburban trains allow access to city centers and you can find them in most of the main cities in Spain, helping about 1.500.000 commuters every day. The RENFE Cercanías (regional services) is a commuter train service that travels to the outskirts of Madrid and beyond. Cercanías stations are underground near the city center but above ground further out. Cercanías run 6am until midnight and offer frequent daily services to places of interest for tourists such as Alcalá de Henares, El Escorial and Aranjuez. This is probably the cheapest and fastest way for daytrips to the nearby cities and several places like Toledo, Segovia, Avila, El Escorial, Aranjuez, Chinchon, Alcala de Henares , the mountains and to the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. These trains are comfortable, punctual, heated in winter and air-conditoned in summer. All lines leave or pass through Atocha. The main suburban train stations are Chamartín, Príncipe Pío, Nuevos Ministerios, Recoletos, Delicias, Embajadores, Aluche and Méndez Alvaro. They usually pass through every 15 to 30 minutes. The single ticket price varies between 1.10 and 3.40 €, depending on the trip. Timetables, prices and other information can be obtained (in Spanish) at the following telephone number: 902 24 02 02 (Info e-mail: atencionviajero@renfe.es)
