Practically all the books are secondhand and in Spanish but whether you read Castilian or not it's great fun to wander, browse, and simply absorb the scene, unchanged over many decades and one of the great traditional sights of outdoor Madrid.

This Bookshop has a wide choice of both new and secondhand English-language books. Here you can trade as well as buy. Opens Monday to Friday 11am to 2:30pm and 4:30 to 7:30pm, Saturdays 10am to 2pm.

J & J. Espíritu Santo 47 (Metro: Noviciado. Bus: 147), Phone: 91-521-87-76
This is the newest of Madrid's English-language librerías. It's basement contains over 15,000 books ranging from horror stories to the classics. There is also a small selection of English language videos. Open Monday to Thursday from noon to 8pm, Friday and Saturday from noon to 10pm, and Sunday from 2 to 8pm.

This bookshop includes English-language fiction, nonfiction, children's books, and videos, as well as a wide variety of books in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian. Opens Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm and 5 to 8pm, and Saturday 10am to 2pm.

Casa del Libro. Gran Vía 29 (Metro: Gran Vía. Bus: 1, 2, 46, 74, 146, or 149), Phone: 91-521-21-13
By far the most comprehensive bookshop in Madrid; It's basement offers a great selection of dictionaries and grammar books, while a ground floor alcove has an up-to-date selection of English-language literature. Open Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 9:30pm, Sunday from 11am to 9pm.

Booksellers. José Abascal 48 (Metro: Gregorio Marañón. Bus: 7, 40, or 147), Phone: 91-442-79-59
The only bookshop in town specializing solely in English- language books, from the latest U.K. and U.S. novels to travel, history, and teaching material. Open Monday to Friday 9:30am to 2pm, 5 to 8:30pm, Saturday 10:30am to 2:30pm. Closed Sunday.

FNAC Preciados 28 (Metro: Callao. Bus: 44, 46, 75, 143, 146, 147, 148, or 149), Phone: 91-595-61-00
Its multistory French store provides a wealth of media fare from a multilingual book section with everything from current bestsellers to travel and history to a huge stock of DVDs and CDs (on the second floor there's a section where you can sit and listen before you buy). Open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 9:30pm, Sunday noon to 9:30pm.
