South of Plaza Mayor

If you go south of Plaza Mayor you'll find the city's biggest market in Madrid: El Rastro. This flea market takes place on Sundays in La Latina, south of Plaza Mayor. Every Sunday and on holidays, booths set up along Calle Ribera de Curtidores and sell anything and everything, from inexpensive clothes and shoes, to second hand items, to CDs and DVDs. There are many antique shops and centres in the permanent shops along Calle Ribera de Curtidores as well, especially at the southern end of the street. Other specialized markets include a second-hand book market on the Cuesta de Moyano, at the southwest corner of El Retiro. However, keep in mind that thieves are rampant here, so secure your wallet carefully, be alert, and proceed with caution.
