Sol, Plaza Mayor and Ópera
The area around the center of Madrid is known as Habsburg Madrid, or Madrid of the Austrias, and the winding streets and passages are sprinkled with old palaces and monasteries, tiny churches and traditional shops selling handmade guitars, religious goods, or fine wines. The center of Madrid is a huddle of medieval alleyways and squares whose most elegant reminder of old Habsburg Madrid is the zone between the Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor. "Madrid de las Austrias" is a special spot in the city characterized by having many of its constructions built while Spain was governed by the Habsburg Empire. This way, this area is very particular not only due to its architectural characteristics but to its historic past as well. There are many constructions belonging to "Habsburg Madrid". One of these constructions is the Monasterio de la Encarnacion, an ancient building. Near this monastery there is the Palacio de Uceda built during this époque as well.
