Plaza de España

One of Madrid's busiest traffic intersections as well as a favorite promenade of its citizens, The Plaza de España lies at the junction between old and modern Madrid, where the Habsburg and Bourbon quarters, the Plaza de Oriente, the Royal Palace and the Plaza Mayor meet the Gran Via of the 1930s and the tower blocks of the 1950s. The last part of the Gran Vía, constructed between 1925 and 1929 leads to the Plaza de España, a large square dominated by two skyscrapers built in the 1950s, the symmetric Edificio de España and the Torre de Madrid. From the Plaza de España you can easily get to the Parque del Oeste or de Rosales where you can visit the Templo de Debod.

This square also features a monument to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and is bordered by two of Madrid's most prominent skyscrapers; also the Palacio Real (Royal Palace) is a short walk south from the plaza. In fact, iIn the center of the plaza is a monument to Spanish novelist, poet and playwright Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Most of the monument was built between 1925 and 1930. It was finished between 1956 and 1957 by Federico Coullaut-Valera Mendigutia. The tower portion of the monument includes a stone sculpture of Cervantes, which overlooks bronze sculptures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Next to the tower are two stone sculptures: One is the peasant woman Aldonza Lorenzo and the other is the beautiful, imaginary Dulcinea del Toboso.
