East of Sol, Madrid
Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate) is the most popular and commercial area in the old town. Its name originates from the eastern city gate located here in the 15th century. Located in the very heart of Madrid, the "Puerta del Sol" lies to the southwest with the Plaza Mayor and the Palacio Real. The Atocha train station is to the southeast, the Parliament and the museum district are situated to the east.
The Door of the Sun is also the neuralgic center of Madrid. In fact, nowadays, this square is famous for being the center of the national road network. The plaque on the pavement outside the old Post Office building denotes "kilometer 0". Around the "Puerta del Sol" infinity of commerce and places of interest exist.
Puerta del Sol is Spain's equivalent of Times Square. Every year on New Year's Eve, the square fills with people to watch the golden ball drop and hear the clock chime in the New Year. "Puerta del Sol" contains the famous clock whose bells mark the traditional eating of the Twelve Grapes and the beginning of a new year.
