Madrid by AirThe vast majority of persons visiting Madrid arrive by airplane at Barajas Airport, located east of the city. Barajas Airport is located just 13 kilometres from the city centre. Barajas Airport is Spain's busiest airport. In fact, current passenger volumes range upwards of 40 million passengers per year, putting it in thetop 20 busiest airports in the world and in Europe's top five. This airport is also the main European hub for flights to Latin America. More than one hundred airlines from all around the world operate from Barajas, with regular flights, charter flights, and air-taxi. Due to the fact that the quantity of persons who arrive here is annually increasing 10%, a new fourth terminal has been constructed. In fact, the new Terminal 4 is the biggest European airport terminal. It has significantly reduced delays and doubled the capacity of the airport to more than 70 million passengers per year. With this new extension, this airport now has capacity to handle around 120 take-offs/landings per hour. With this new construction, Barajas is now a fully operational four-runway airport. You can get to Barajas Airport by metro (underground - line 8) from Nuevos Ministerios station in about thirty minutes. It runs 6am-1.30am. Tickets cost €1.30 and trains arrive at Terminal 2. To get to Terminal T4, the metro stop is Barajas, where there is a bus (no. 201) to the new terminal. In the same way, you can access the airport by road on the N-II (exits 10 and 11) or on the M-40 (exits 3 and 9). However, the route by road from central Madrid is variable, depending on rush-hour traffic, and can take anything from twenty minutes to an hour. Taxis are always available and cost around €17 from the centre to the airport, unless you get stuck in traffic. Remember that the taxi service charges an extra fee for trips to the airport. Barajas airport also offers a wide variety of services, such as banks, car hire, restaurants, reservation agencies, VIP lounges, etc. There are several airlines (about 120) in Spain's main Airport.
