Eating in Ibiza

Ibiza has not only a large collection of clubs. The same goes for eating out. Ibiza Town is always a good bet with some excellent seafood restaurants around the harbour. However, due to the lack of agriculture on some parts of the island, fish has always been the mainstay of the local Mediterranean diet. As in Majorca, pork is important in the local diet in Ibiza as well.

Typical Ibizan dishes are based on traditional Mediterranean produce such as fish and seafood, rice dishes, grilled meat and vegetables, salsa alioli (garlic sauce) and stews. Most pastelerias and many bars sell ensaimada, a sort of flat, soft pastry coil. Flao, a sweet cheese and mint flan, is a bit more difficult to track down. Greixonera is a spiced pudding, and maccarrones de San Juan is cinnamon- and lemon-flavored milk baked with cheese.

There are many mediterranean restaurants in the Island. However, if you are hungry and want to junk it out, there are a Pizza Hut and KFC next to Bar M.

Ama Lur Restaurant
Ctra. Sant Miguel, Km 2.3 (Santa Gertrudis de Frutera) 9 Kms from Ibiza. Phone: 971 314 554.
Prawn salad with foie, orange soup with fresh cheese ice cream, veal with peppers, honey covered lamb with sesame, raspberry compote and yoghurt ice cream.

Can Alfredo Restaurant
Paseo Vara del Rey, 16. (Ibiza). Tel: 971 311 274.
Good traditional Ibizan cuisine. Scorpion fish in prawn and squid sauce, hake with caviar, pork with melon and plum puree, mandarin pudding and cinnamon ice cream.

Cana Joana Restaurant
Ctra. Ibiza-San José, Km 10, 16 Kms from Ibiza. Tel: 971800158.
'Royal eggs', Ibizan potato puree with back truffle and parsley, 'Mini-tarta Tatin' with cream and yoghurt with raspberry compote.

El Portalón
Plaça dels Desamparats 1-2
El Portalón attracts gay as well as straight couples, usually European. The food is a combination of Spanish, Catalán, and Mediterranean. It's expensive, but worth the extra euros.

El Corsario
Carrer Ponent 5, Around Town
Menu specialties include various pastas, two different preparations of lamb, and especially fresh fish brought up from the harbor. The cookery is home-style and well prepared, especially if you stick to the fish dishes.

Other restaurants are: El Pirata (with the best pizza on the island), Basil Thai (one of the best Thai joints around close to Ibiza Town), La Brasa (the best place for grilled meats & seafood) and The Curry Club.
