Explore Huelva

The city of Huelva is an important fishing port, and is the capital of the province. A stroll around the centre will reveal those monuments that were erected in response to the explosion of wealth in Huelva, injected into the local economy from the exploitation of the mines north of the city.
Huelva's greatest church is Catedral de la Merced, which was constructed in 1606. Its facade is painted a vivid salmon pink with beautiful belfries. On the interior, a white baroque decor predominates. The "Catedral de la Merced" contains an image of 'Virgen de la Cintra'' the town's patroness. The building is usually open during the day, though it occasionally closes unexpectedly.
A Roman aqueduct supplies the city with water. Nearby La Rábida monastery, where Columbus made his plans, is a summer university. In 1911 the art-nouveau Conservatorio de Música was inaugurated, now the Clínica Sanz de Frutos, on Calle Rico. Just round the corner on Calle Vásquez López is the Gran Teatro (1923), with a magnificent neo-classical façade and ornate interior. Nearby are numerous reminders of Christopher Columbus, who spent much time here before setting sail for America. Columbus devotees can explore the monastery at La Rábida and also visit the bay from which the explorer set sail at Palos de la Frontera. North of the centre is the neo-Moorish Plaza de Toros, completed in the early 20th century.
