The Palacio del Infantado is a splendid architectural example, with Renaissance and Mudejar details. This magnific palace, in a style which mingles Late Gothic and Mudéjar features, was built for the Mendoza family between 1461 and 1480. The architect of this building was Juan Guas. It was built at the wish of the second Duke of Infantado, Íñigo López de Mendoza. The construction of the building, which nowadays houses the Museum, the Provincial Archive and the Municipal Library, is a magnificent work in Isabelline style presided over by a superb Renaissance façade. Inside, it is structured around the Patio de los Leones (Courtyard of the Lions) which is made up of two galleries. Mudejar decoration is reflected in the tiles, grills and coffered ceilings. Right in front of the façade with the Mendoza arms there was a square. On one side there was also a Moorish park, which later was Renaissance style. Catedral de Sigüenza – Sigüenza Cathedral
Sigüenza is filled with religious and political history. The cathedral is a very massive Gothic edifice of ashlar stone. Its construction began in the 12th century promoted by the Bishop Don Bernardo de Agén, however, the work went on until the 16th century. This is one of the finest Late Romanesque buildings in Spain, with some Gothic and Plateresque features. With its two battlemented towers it has the aspect of a fortress. Its façade has three doors, with a railed court in front. On the southern wall of the presbytery is the Gothic tomb of the Bishop of Alonso Carrillo de Albornoz, cardinal of San Eustaquio, as well as the Knight of Gómez Carrillo de Acuña and his wife. The Atienza Castle is a clear example of a rock castle built on a tall abutment of rock. The castle was formed of two walled precincts. The main nucleus was within the first. The residential districts were within the second wall. In the centre were 2 underground reservoirs for supplying water. The Atieza Castle acquired great strategic importance when it became an important link in the chain of Moslem defenses along the Duero river to the eleventh century. The 13th century church of Santa María la Mayor (or Santa María de la Fuente) was built on the site of an earlier mosque. This Cathedral has a minaret-like tower in Mudéjar style and contains a number of 15th century tombs. The high altar is of great beauty. Inside there are three 14th century naves. The main facade has a portico with Renaissance columns and capitals. The other entrances have horseshoe arches. The last reformation of the temple took place in the 17th century when the cupola of the transept was built. This Palace was designed and built in 1542 by Alonso de Cobarruvias in Renaissance style. This palace is located in the Plaza de la Hora. It was ordered to be built by Lady Ana de la Cerda, the famous princess of Éboli, in the 16th century. It is situated next to the wall of Pastrana and has a parade ground in front. Here the princess was made prisioner until her death in 1592; because she was Felipe II lover. |
