Eating in Granada

Granada's cuisine has its roots in Muslim, Jewish and Christian cultures. So, you'll find here several typical dishes as: Broad beans with ham, San Antón stew, Sacromonte omelette; some pastries and cakes likecuajada de carnaval, soplillas de la Alpujarra, torta real de Motril; and many kinds of fruits like oranges, pomegranates, avocados, kiwis and other tropical fruit.

Granada has a rich and delicious cuisine, due to its geographic location, between the mountains and the sea. For instance, from the high mountain ranges around the city comes the reputated Jamón de Trevelez, a ham that is cured in the snow. From the coast, Ajo Blanco is a delicious cold soup made of almonds and Espetones, sardines grilled at the barbecue. Original from the town itself are Tortilla al Sacromonte, the local version of the "spanish omelette", Habas Fritas con Jamon, fried beans with cured ham, and Pollo al Ajillo, chicken with garlic. In the mountain range Sierra de Alpujarra are well-known Migas Alpujarreñas, made of fried pieces of bread, and Pollo con Tomate, chicken in tomato sauce.

On the other hand, if you've been in another part of Spain before, you ate "Tapas" for sure. Tapas is a collection of different plates you can order as a appetizer or just eat with your drinks. Granada has lots of lively bars and restaurants serving a range of tasty tapas and good food. Granada has, next to numerous tapas bars, some very nice restaurants as well, were you can enjoy your meal in the quiet and refreshing surrounding of a garden.

In the Calle Caldereria, for instance, you can find quite some Moroccan teashops and restaurants. The restaurants are scattered all throughout town and if you want to check out a good area for having dinner, check out the area between the Plaza Nueva and Gran Vía. One of the greatest pleasures in Granada is to stroll around the Albaicín (the old part of the city) having a drink at one of the many terrazas/restaurants/bars.
