The Museu d'História de la Ciutat or City History Museum is located in the heart of the old part of Girona, in Carrer de la Força. Housed in the old 18th-century Capuchin Convent de Sant Antoni, this museum has a collection that dates from the time of Puig d'en Roca (Catalonia's oldest prehistoric site) to the present (19th-20th C.). A tour of this museum gives visitors the opportunity to learn more about this city's past and present in a fun and entertaining way. It also provides an opportunity to discover incredible spots in the historic area.
The museum occupies several rooms of the former convent of Sant Antoni, home to the Capuchin Friars in the 18th century and includes, among other historic relics and antiques, Girona's (and Spain's) first electric streetlights. From the original Capuchin convent, there remains the cemetery used for drying corpses before mummifying them (one of three of this type left in the world). |
