In a former Romanesque and Gothic Episcopal palace (Palau Episcopal) next to the cathedral, this museum displays artworks spanning 10 centuries. It houses some of Catalunya's most important pieces of art including sculptures, paintings and religious objects dating from the 9th century to the 20th century; from the time of Greek colonisation to the present day. Its collections of Romanesque and Gothic art are particularly outstanding.
This is the place where you'll find famous paintings like the altarpiece of Sant Pere of Púbol by Bernat Martorell and the altarpiece of Sant Miguel de Crüilles by Luis Borrassa. Both of these works, from the 15th century, are exemplary of Catalán Gothic painting. You'll see also an altar stone of Sant Pere de Roda, which was made in wood and stone. Also, you'll find the 12th-century Crüilles Timber, which is a unique piece of Romanesque polychrome wood. The Lady of Besalù, from the 15th century, is one of the best Virgins carved in alabaster. |
