The stunning archeological museum of Girona is a great representation of the Catalonian Romanesque style. This important building contains several valuable relics from the classic and the prehistoric era. In the 10th century the archeological museum was the Monastery of Saint Pere in the old quarter Barri Vell. The museum was founded in 1846. Nowadays, the building is one of the most important buildings in Catalonia. In fact, the museum is part of the MAC (Archaeology Museums of Catalonia.).
The city walls of Girona were a military structure and they played an important role in the protection of citizens against many invaders. The construction of the city walls dates from the 9th century. Nowadays, the walls are the most important historical sight in Girona and visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the town and amazing landscapes at the top of the walls. The walls encircle a part of the city nowadays. Tourists can start the tour starting from the "Passeig Arqueològic (the archeological walk), visit the cathedral, the Arabic baths (Banys Arabs) and finally, the Jewish quarter. |
