This Museum was founded in 1846 as the Provincial Museum of Antiquities and Fine Arts. It's set in a 10th-century Benedictine monastery, a noteworthy example of the Catalonian Romanesque. The museum was relocated on several occasions until it arrived at its current location in the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants in 1857. The Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia - Girona counts with artifacts from Prehistoric times and the classic era and it became a part of MAC (Archaeology Museum of Catalonia) in 1992. Its collections now specialise in prehistory and archaeology.
Another beautiful sight in Girona are its ancient walls. Girona is a walled city which dates back to the Roman period and, From the walls, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the city. Girona is easy to explore. You could start at the northern edge of the city, where the Roman city wall begins (This is called "Passeig Arqueològic" - the archaeological walk). Within the wall you can still see the remains of a Roman road, built to connect Rome to Tarragona. Continuing along the wall you can visit the old quarter, the Banys Arabs (Arabic baths), the Cathedral, museums and finally the old Jewish quarter. |
