Catedral

Girona Travel Guide Girona Travel Guide

Visible from most points in the city and a five-minute walk down hill from the Jewish quarter, the Gothic Cathedral dates from 1416 and contains stunning stained glass windows and the world’s largest single-naved vault. Girona's Cathedral is one of the most impressive buildings in Europe. It has a cloister and tower (called "Torre de Carlemany"), with outstanding reliefs.

Original cathedral was a Romanesque construction (S. XI-XII) which was redesigned by Guillem Bofill in 1416. It was built over the former Central Mosque and shows a mix of gothic, renaissance and baroque motifs. It is also the centre point to begin a walk around the town. The Girona's Cathedral have the widest Gothic nave in the world (22'98 mts.) and the second widest nave of all styles after St. Peter's basilica in Rome. Things to look out for are the marble throne, which is seat of Carlomagno. This throne was built when his troops took over the city in 785AD. Another antique that you'll see in the Cathedral is a tapestry dating back to the 11th - 12th century called 'the creation'.

The cathedral contains many works of art, displayed for the most part in its museum. Its prize exhibit is a tapestry of The Creation, a unique piece of 11th- or 12th-century Romanesque embroidery depicting humans and animals in the Garden of Eden. The other major work displayed is a 10th century copy of a Beatus manuscript called "Commentary on the Apocalypse" (Códex del Beatus) which is one of the world's rarest manuscripts. You will also find an enormous 19th century organ and the best preserved Romanesque tapestry in Europe. Inside the Romanesque cloister there's a gallery with a double colonnade, which has a series of biblical scenes. From the cloister you can view the Torre de Carlemany (Charlemagne's Tower).
