These 12th-century Banys Arabs (Arab baths), an example of Romanesque civic architecture, are in the old quarter of the city. The Arab Baths date back to 1194 and were probably developed out of a Jewish mikwe (ritual bath). In the 15th century, they came into private ownership until 1617 when they became part of the Order of Capuchin nuns' convent, which they used as a laundry room. In 1929, however, Girona's monumental Arab Baths was declared Spanish Patrimony and the reconstruction and repair of these ancient baths could begin.
Inside the Banys Arabs, there is 2 rooms: The caldarium (hot bath), with its paved floor, and the frigidarium (cold bath), with its central octagonal pool surrounded by pillars that support a prism-like structure. Although the Moorish baths were heavily restored in 1929, they give you an idea of what the ancient ones were like. |
