Explore Barcelona

Barcelona is a fantastic city with lots of things to do and see. Located at the Mediterranean sea in the very north of the Spanish coast, is certainly the most cosmopolitan and economically most active city in this country. Summer in Barcelona is serious party time, with week-long fiesta fun. But year-round the city sizzles - it's always on the biting edge of architecture, food, fashion, style, music and good times. Also, this exciting city has mote than five hundred kilometres of coastline stretch past the three main cities of Gerona in the Costa Brava, the Catalan capital Barcelona and Tarragona in the Costa Dorada.

Barcelona is more than just a single city. It’s a collection of multi-faceted cities and cultures. The visitor unfamiliar with its history might be surprised that such a modern and enterprising city preserves its historic Gothic center almost intact. In fact, Barcelona has been a center of Modernist architecture and is distinguished specially by the works of genial Antoní Gaudí, who together with his great contemporaries gave new and exciting looks to it, but has remained since then at the top of modernity. Its museums, theatres, art galleries and nightlife are of an impressive high standard. Besides that, this art and design centre has a lot of interesting sights to offer to its visitors.

The best place to relax and watch people go by, is 'Las Ramblas', a pedestrian street with dozens of outdoor cafes. You’ll also find an endlessly fascinating flowing receptacle of pageant-jugglers, singers, dancers, puppeteers, sidewalk artists, living statues and assorted oddballs on parade. Nearby is 'Plaça Real', with plenty of restaurants and bars, and 'Palau Guell', built by Gaudí in his undulating art-nouveau style.

After an extreme makeover lasting more than two decades, Barcelona has transformed itself into one of the most dynamic cities in the world. The city of Barcelona has a population of 1.510.000, but this number spirals to more than 4.000.000 if the outlying areas are also included. It has seen a steady increase of the number of hotels, from 170 in 2000 to 209 in 2004, 9 of which are 5 stars hotels, though the 4 stars category is the one that has seen a bigger increase.
