The city is the capital of the province of Cadiz located in the autonomous community of Andalucía. Its total area is 12,10 km².
Cadiz is one of the major cities in the metropolitan area framed in the Bay of Cadiz- Jerez, being the third largest metropolitan area of Andalusia. It is defined by the Spatial Plan of Andalusia as a polynuclear conurbation which consists of Cadiz, Chiclana de la Frontera, Jerez de la Frontera, Puerto Real, El Puerto de Santa Maria and San Fernando.
The boundaries of Cadiz are: Atlantic Ocean on the northwest; The bay of Cadiz and Rota on the north; The bay of Cadiz and The Port of Santa Maria on the northeast; Atlantic Ocean on the west; The bay of Cadiz and Puerto Real on the east; Atlantic Ocean on the southwest; San Fernando on the South and San Fernando and Cadiz Bay on the Southeast.
