Markets, Supermarkets & Delis in Barcelona
Everybody loves a good market, the sights and sounds, the thrill of bargaining, the objects you would never usually find, the smell of the freshest food. If you want to buy fresh food, or make up your own snacks and meals, use the city's markets. Travellers on an extremely limited budget can do well for themselves by using these excellent markets, bakeries and delis:
Ramblas and the old town
- Champion, Rambla 113. Department store (formerly "Simago") with food department. Open Mon–Thurs 9am–8pm, Fri & Sat 9am–9pm.
- Dia, c/del Carme; and at c/Comtessa de Sobradiel. Fairly basic supermarket, with the first branch just around the corner from the much pricier Champion (see above).
- La Fuente, c/de Ferran 20. A xarcuteria, but better visited for its wide selection of tinned and preserved food, wines and cheeses. Open Mon–Fri 9am–1pm & 4–8pm, Sat 9am–1pm; closed Aug.
- Mercat Sant Antoni, Ronda de Sant Pau (junction with c/del Comte). Food stalls in the middle of this large market – though most are shut in Aug. Open Mon–Sat 8am–2.30pm & 5.30–8pm.
- Mercat Sant Josep/La Boqueria, Rambla Sant Josep 89. The best place in the city for fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and dried foods. Open Mon–Sat 8am–8pm.
- Mercat de Santa Caterina, Pg Lluis Companys. A cheap alternative to the Boqueria and handy for the Parc de Ciutadella and the beach. Open Mon–Fri 8am–2.30pm & 5–7.30pm, Sat 8am–2.30pm.
- La Pineda, c/del Pi 16. Ancient grocery store-cum-bar where the elderly staff dispense tinned products and enormous quantities of cured meats. Open 9am–3pm & 4–10pm.
Eixample and Gràcia
- El Corte Inglés, Pl de Catalunya; Metro Catalunya. Supermarket and deli as well as full department store goings-on. Open daily 10am–9.30pm.
- Drugstore David, c/Tuset 19–21; Metro Diagonal. Pizzas, supplies and snacks available daily from 9am to 5am.
- Fleca Balmes, c/Balmes 156; Metro Passeig de Gràcia. Extraordinary range of breads from one of the oldest bakeries in the city.
- Mauri, Rambla de Catalunya 100; Metro Passeig de Gràcia. A superb deli specializing in cakes and pastries, with an attached café. Open Mon–Sat 9am–9pm, Sun 9am–3pm.
- Semon, c/Ganduxer 31; FGC Bonanova. Terrific selection of meats, cheeses, wines and cakes; you can eat in the shop, too, if you want to sample some of the food. Open Mon–Sat 10am–3pm & 5–9pm, Sun 10am–2.30pm.
- VIPS, Rambla de Catalunya 7; Metro Catalunya. Supermarket supplies, as well as pizzas, grills and sandwiches. Open Mon–Thurs 8am–2am, Fri 8am–3am, Sat & Sun 9am–2am.
There are many places in Barcelona where you can buy vegetarian and vegan products such as Tofu, Seitan and vegetarian sausages, burgers and patés. The most central health-food stores are: Comme-Bio, Via Laietana 28; Herbolari Ferran, Pl Reial 18; and Santiveri, Ptge Bacardi in the Boqueria market (with another branch at c/Balmes 5; Metro Universitat).
If you're not in the center of the city, less central markewtssbut well stocked are: La Tenda de la Natura, c/Compte Borrell 81; Magico-sí, c/de Torrijos 37, Metro Fontana; and Botiga de Sol, Plaça del Sol, Gràcia.
