Barcelona What to See

Located on the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona is the historical capital of Cataluña. At the same time is Spain's second leading city in both size and importance. Barcelona has an impressive architectural heritage that includes the Gothic Quarter, with its cathedral, the Episcopal Palace, the old City Hall Building and the splendid Palace of the Generalitat, the site of the Catalan government. Mediterranean vistas and unique culture making it an especially rich and rewarding city to experience.

Because of its rich history, Barcelona is filled with many landmark buildings and world-class museums. The city boasts the work of the modernist architect Antonio Gaudi. Some of Gaudi's jobs include the unfinished church La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, and the Mil Home, among others. His whimsical architecture enlivens the streets of Barcelona and makes for some of the finest city-walking in the world. The art will beckon you from museums, squares, churches and streetsides. Barcelona is the site of the Fine Arts Museum of Catalonia, the Picasso Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum, and much more.

The old city, with winding, narrow streets (Roman walls are still visible), has many historic structures, including the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia with its fine cloisters, built between 13th and 15th cent., also the Church of Santa María del Mar, the city hall, and the Lonja or exchange. The vibrant central drag, La Rambla, will lead you to the city's marvellous medieval quarter, Barri Gòtic ('Gothic Quarter' in Catalan), which is the centre of the old city of Barcelona.

Here in Barcelona you can also find beatiful city views. From Montjuic you'll enjoy the sunset over the city. If you are lucky (try on weekends), after the sunset you´ll see the Magic Fountain Show. However, the best views of Barcelona are from el Tibidabo (Spain's Corcovado). Anyway,If you have not time enough to go to Tibidabo, you can get great views too, from Parc güell.

Barcelona has 4.5 km of beatiful beaches. These beaches are divided in: Sant Sebastià and Barceloneta (both 1100 m in length), Nova Icària, Bogatell, Mar Bella and Nova Mar Bella (ranging from 400 to 640 m). The two first beaches are the largest and the historical beaches of Barcelona. Those beaches are separated by the Olympic port from the other five beaches. These last 5 ones were as a result of the city restructuring to host the 1992 Summer Olympics, when a great number of industrial buildings were demolished.
