The city is well known for its culture, finance, trading and tourism. It is the capital of the autonomous community of Cataluña, located on the Mediterranean coast with a total area of 803 km2 (310 sq mi), being the second largest city in Spain.
The city borders are the municipalities of Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Sant Adrià de Besòs on the north; the Mediterranean Sea on the east; El Prat de Llobregat and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat on the south; and Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Just Desvern, Esplugues de Llobregat, Sant Cugat del Vallès, and Montcada i Reixac on the west.
Since 1987, the city has been divided into 10 administrative districts , each one with its own council led by a city councillor.
The districts are: Ciutat Vella,El Ensanche, Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts,Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Gracia Horta-Guinardó, Nou Barris, San Andrés, Sant Martí.
