Gay & Lesbian Barcelona

Barcelona has long had the reputation as a city with a vibrant and integrated gay scene. It certainly has a very gay friendly attituden & with a wealth of sights, things to do, evening enertainment options, & an excellent climate, it is hardly surpirising so many people are taking an interest. The main gay area in Barcelona is known (unofficially) as the Gayxample, which is to be found in the L'Eixample zone in the heart of the city. Many of the gay bars, clubs and hostels are around the Gayxample.

Another area that is very popular with the Gay Community is Sitges, which is one of the most beautiful towns along the Barcelona coast, and was an artists colony in the late 19th century (it was where Miro was born and Dali had his holidays).

Sitges is just a short train journey away from Barcelona and these days it has become a very popular gay beach resort, with the gay population accounting for almost 30% of summer tourism. There are many gay beaches like Platja de la Bossa Rodona. Bear in mind, however, that you will need to book well in advance if you want to come to Sitges for the Gay Carnival in Feb, it gets packed out pretty quickly.

Accommodation, bars & nightclubs in Barcelona for the Gay Community

There is also a good variety of accommodation in Barcelona, as well as limitless dining options, cafes, bars, & nightclubs. Eixample is the zone with the most night bars and clubs. In particular there are a concentration of gay bars & shops around the Calle Balmes & Calle Diputacio streets (the famous zone Gayxample). Furthermore, Gayxample has a super selection of night clubs, hairdressers, saunas, etc., and all without having to set foot outside this diverse and cosmopolitan area.

Barcelona doesn't have a Lesbian Club yet. However with the growing number of clubs hosting lesbian nights there is no doubt that there will be one soon. Spain was actually the third country in the world to legalize gay marriage, thus it has a very progressive tolerant outlook.
