Barcelona, located at the Mediterranean sea, is certainly the most cosmopolitan and economically most active city in this country. Due to its good climate and its cultural offerings, Barcelona is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. In fact, Barcelona houses over 45 renowned museums and is famous for its unique contemporary architecture and the famous works of architect Antoni Gaudí as "La Sagrada Familia", "Park Güell", "Palau Güell", the "Casa Milà" (La Pedrera) and the Casa Batlló. Of course, Barcelona is not only modernity. It has an old history, and there are monuments of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance periods or still before.
Barcelona's historical center conforms the area around Plaça Catalunya. This includes Passeig de Gracia, the Rambla de Catalunya, the Gothic Quarter and the upper half of Diagonal Avenue, which is the main commercial area of the city. This ciry has many shopping centers as well, like L'Illa, Diagonal Mar (located on opposite ends of Diagonal Avenue), La Maquinista, Glòries (located near the square of the same name) and the Maremagnum, located at the port.
