Best of Barcelona
The wild and whimsical architecture of Gaudí enlivens the streets of Barcelona and makes for some of the finest city-walking in the world. In other words, Barcelona is an open-air museum. The art will beckon you from museums and streetsides. The vibrant central drag, La Rambla, will lead you to the city's marvellous medieval quarter, Barri Gòtic.
You can visit Barcelona, and its turistical places, by bus, bicycle or on foot, and enjoy its bustling streets. There are many ways to discover the city and lots of things to do, for those interested in culture, entertainment or shopping.
Some of the best museums, ancient churches and beautiful places that you will find in Barcelona are:
 |
Las Ramblas
The Rambles (Catalan "Ramblas") is the principal thoroughfare in the city center. The area around the Catalunya Place, including the city's historical center includes the Passeig de Gracia, the Rambla de Catalunya and the upper half of the Diagonal avenue is the main commercial area of the city. |
|
"Las Ramblas" begins at the Pl. Catalunya and continues down towards the Mirador de Colón, Columbus Monument, in the harbour. The 1,180m/1,290yds long section to the Plaça de Catalunya is lined with plane trees; with its wide pedestrian zone flanked by a narrow road on each side it is a favorite place for a stroll, and is one of Barcelona's main attractions. |

Today, on the ground floor there are offices of the Caixa de Catalunya, which is responsible for the conservation of the building, and some shops. | In 1886 Gaudí was instructed by his patron, Eusebi Güell, to build an upper-class residence on a plot of land measuring only 60 x 73ft, on the Carrer Nou de la Rambla, a narrow street in the old town. In the Palau Güell, perhaps more than in any other building, we see the ostentatious imagination of the master builder. However, this building is closed for renovation until 2007. |
