Arrival Barcelona by TrainBarcelona has direct railway links with a number of cities, including Paris, Zurich and Milan. The AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) high-speed rail system was recently extended from Madrid to Tarragona in southern Catalonia, and is expected to reach Barcelona by 2007. Renfe cercanías/rodalies and the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) run Barcelona's widespread commuter train service. Sants Estació Barcelona is a major hub for RENFE, the Spanish state railway network. Sants Estació, which is located on Sants-Montjuïc district, is Barcelona's major railway stations and metropolitan rail network. Sants Estació has 2 entrances, in Pl. Països Catalans and Pl. Avinguda Diagonal, one of the main shopping arteries in Barcelona, is also nearby. Some long-distance and regional trains use Estació Passeig de Gràcia. Direct trains to Montpellier with connections to Paris and Geneva depart from here. Below the level of the square, and with entrances from several sides, lies the city's principal Metro junction; in addition, the trains covering the city routes (e.g. the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat to Tibidabo, Pedralbes and Sant Cugat del Vallés) run from here.
