Barcelona has direct railway links with a number of cities, including Paris, Zurich and Milan. The AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) high-speed rail system was recently extended from Madrid to Tarragona in southern Catalonia, and is expected to reach Barcelona by 2007. Renfe cercanías/rodalies and the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) run Barcelona's widespread commuter train service.

Sants Estació

Barcelona is a major hub for RENFE, the Spanish state railway network. Sants Estació, which is located on Sants-Montjuïc district, is Barcelona's major railway stations and metropolitan rail network. Sants Estació has 2 entrances, in Pl. Països Catalans and Pl. Joan Peiró.

Estació de França

Further to the north of the Stock Exchange and to the right is the Estació de França, the station for France, with rail connections to the north.

Passeig de Gràcia Station

Located north of the city, 16 kilometres from the airport, Passeig de Gràcia Station is within walking distance of two of Gaudí's major buildings: Casa Batló and Casa Millà. Avinguda Diagonal, one of the main shopping arteries in Barcelona, is also nearby. Some long-distance and regional trains use Estació Passeig de Gràcia. Direct trains to Montpellier with connections to Paris and Geneva depart from here.

Plaça de Catalunya Station

The busy Plaça de Catalunya forms the northwestern end of the inner-city Ramblas and also of the core of the old town. Below the level of the square, and with entrances from several sides, lies the city's principal Metro junction; in addition, the trains covering the city routes (e.g. the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat to Tibidabo, Pedralbes and Sant Cugat del Vallés) run from here. This station receives both national and international passenger trains.
