Spain Travel Guide

Moncloa is the Madrid’s district where is located the Palace of Moncloa. This Palace has been the residence of Spain presidents since 1977. Some of the presidents who have lived here are Adolfo Suarez (the first one), Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo y Bustelo, Felipe Gonzalez, Jose Maria Aznar and the current president: Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

In Moncloa we can find “El Arco de la Victoria”, also known as “La Puerta de la Moncloa”. It was built during 1950 until 1956, to commemorate the victory in the Spanish Civil War. It is located on the avenue of the same name. Another place that is worth visiting around Moncloa is “El Faro de Moncloa”; it is a tower of 110 meters high. It was inaugurated in 1992 and from there you can see a big part of Madrid. An elevator gets you to the top of the building in only 20 seconds. However, some time after its inauguration there were some critics due to the lack of security in it. For this reason, it has been closed since 2008 to remodel it. It is supposed to be open in September 2011.
