East of Sol, Madrid

La Puerta del Sol (Gate of the Sun), is one of the most popular places in Madrid. It is located in the centre of the city and it’s known as the Times Square of Madrid because on New Year’s Eve people go there, to wait for the arrival of the New Year that is announced by the chiming of the “Reloj de Torre” in the “Casa de Correos”; this celebration is broadcasted by national television.

Due to its many visitors, there are a lot of businesses there; we can find department stores, hotels, cafes, restaurants, stores, etc. There are also several Metro stations. But without a doubt, visitors want to go there to observe its famous buildings and architectonic samples. For example:

  • Kilometro cero; symbolic representation of the centre of Spain.
  • El Oso y el Madroño Statue; dedicated to the heroes of May 2nd.
  • Mariblanca statue.
  • The statue of Charles III of Spain.
  • The “Tio Pepe” Advertising.
  • La “Casa de los Correos”.

This is an important place in Madrid’s history and an obligatory destination for tourists to enjoy its beautiful and ancient buildings, sculptures and amazing landscape.
