Costs, Money And Banks in Spain

Spain has stopped being as cheap as it was before; however, it’s still cheaper than northern Europe. What you will spend for your holiday depends on many factors, like the province or town you choose to stay in, or the activities you decide to dothere. Entrance fee to most monuments is quite cheap. Public transport is offered at an affordable price, (excluding high-speed trains, which can be faster than some plane flights).

If you prefer travelling as a backpackeraround your shoulders, you can expect to spend around € 40 per day for youth/backpacker hostels and food. If you prefer moderate expenses, then you will fit between 100 and 150 Euros per day including full board in a three-star hotel. In case you would rather enjoy a five-star hotel plus some gourmet delicacies, then you’d be looking at several hundred Euros a day.

The official currency, that changed Spanish pesetas, has been the Euro since the January 1st, 2002.

In Spain usingyour credit or debit cards are not a problem. They are widely accepted at restaurants and hotels (particularly from moderate to luxury ranks). You can pay with cards in supermarkets and many shops. Cash machines are also very frequent financial tools in this country, so there’s no need to worry, even if you are situated in a small town. Another option to get your money to Spain is to use the wide network of Western Union. Alternatively, you can pay via the increasingly popular PayPal.

Warning: be careful of pickpockets! Don’t place your money neither at upper pockets of your backpacks and rucksacks nor in your camera bags and so on. Spanish holiday sites are popular places for pickpockets, especially now that there’s a financial crisis and unemployment in Spain. It is always an option to divide your cash in several places, so you don’t lose everything if robbed or assaulted. And it’s better to avoid bringing too much cash with you unless necessary, and after ruling out the options stated above (PayPal, credit and debit cards). Travellers cheques can be cashed at exchange offices or banks (however, for a bit higher exchange rate compared to cash).
