Medina Azahara

The archeological rests of Medina Azahara are located about five kilometers from Cordoba. Medina Azaharameans "brilliant city" or "beautiful town". It was the de-facto capital of the Muslim Spain. Built by one of the most powerful caliphs of the time, Abd-ar-Rahman III al-Nasir. The construction of Medina Azahara served as a site of power to the caliph of the time and it was where he lived with his court.

Medina Azahara is considered as the "Forgotten Versailles of the Middle Ages". The construction of the building is fantastic, it follows the shape of the mountain, dividing it in three sections: The palace is located in one; the fruits, plants and gardens in another, and the houses and the mosque are in the last section.

Historians believe Medina Azaharawas built due topolitic and ideological reasons; the caliphate of the time needed to show its greatness in the area.
